Dating

Over the next few weeks I am going to be talking about all the skills you need to successfully date. Let’s be real: dating is scary! Putting your heart out there on the line can be really tough to do. And, if you’ve known me for a while you know what I say “No one wakes up in the morning thinking ‘what can I do to fail today’”.

Let’s jump right in with a biggie. Trust. How do you earn trust? How do you protect the trust that someone has shown you? True trust is a gift that needs to be taken care of.

  1. Don’t jump into a dating relationship feet first and asking questions later. Trust takes time.
  2. Always be truthful. Then there is no room for “he said/she said” rumors. If you can’t be 100% truthful with your partner, you’re not ready to date.
  3. Stop and think before you react. If your homie tells you something negative about your date, before you react, stop and think. Are they emotionally excited to tell you this thing? Is the message delivered via group of chattering people? Ask yourself: are these people in it for the drama or in it because they care about you. If the messenger is excited or in a group 99% of the time they want to stir up some drama. Why? I have no clue. But this is the reason every adult in the SSS office will tell you if you’re in middle school you’re too young to date. Too many of you buy into the drama.
  4. Always be respectful to your date. I may not be up-to-date on the latest “terms of endearment”, but I can tell you with 100% certainty whoever dates my granddaughter (when she’s 25 – the perfect age to start dating ) It doesn’t matter what you mean when you call her your bitch or your hoe. If her parents and I did our job right, she will end that romance.

Enough for today. Next week we will talk about anger management.
