Guide to a Healthy Diet

Christian Meza

Everyone knows that eating healthily will improve your life physically in many ways.  Benefits include improving your cholesterol levels, reducing your blood pressure, helping you manage your weight, and controlling your blood sugar. But the question most people have is “how do I start eating healthily?” Here are some suggestions.

What is essential for a healthy diet?

When starting a healthy diet it should have a balance of protein, carbs, and fats these are known as macronutrients.

Each of these is essential in a healthy diet. Proteins are made up of amino acids. You need protein in your diet to help your body repair cells and make new ones. Protein is also important for growth and development in children, teens, and pregnant women. And carbs should be your body’s main source of energy in a healthy, balanced diet. They’re broken down into glucose (sugar) before being absorbed into your blood. The glucose then enters your body’s cells with the help of insulin. Fat is also important because it’s a source of essential fatty acids, which the body cannot make itself. Fat helps the body absorb vitamin A, vitamin D and vitamin E. These vitamins are fat-soluble, which means they can only be absorbed with the help of fats.

What should You eat?

Protein, carbs, and fats are essential for a healthy diet, but what type of protein, carbs, and fats should you eat?  An important thing to remember is that not all carbs are good and not all fats are good for you.

Here is a list of protein, carbs, and fats for you.

For foods you can eat that are high in protein are chicken breast, salmon, tuna, greek yogurt, eggs, beans, lentils, and quinoa. For foods that you can eat that have healthy carbs are oats, brown rice, sweet potatoes, potatoes, whole wheat bread, beans, whole wheat pasta, fruits, vegetables, and multi grain cereal.
